Digitális fényképezőgépünk rengeteg információt rögzít, ha a RAW fájlformátumot használjuk. Az expozíciós értékek mellett számtalan apró, de adott esetben értékes információ kerül feljegyzésre, melyek zömét „beleerőszakolták” az EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) adattábla mezőibe. Arra azonban csak kevesek gondolnak, hogy a fényképezés során felvett metaadatok halmaza jóval nagyobb, mint ez a szabványosított tábla: a nyersfájlok feldolgozásakor, „hívásakor” a dekódoló szoftver egyszerűen eldobja az általa fölöslegesnek ítélt információt. Az így létrehozott JPEG fájl EXIF adatai között már csak az olyan szabványosított mezők lesznek kitöltve, mint például az ISO érték, a záridő, a rekeszérték, a használt objektív típusa, a gyújtótávolság, a GPS adatok stb. Bár úgy tűnik, mintha ezek az elmentett paraméterek önmagukban is óriási halmazt alkotnának, kulcsfontosságú paraméterek vesznek oda a konverzió során.
Kíváncsi vagy, hogy mégis mik ezek a „kulcsfontosságú” paraméterek? A JPEG konverzió után például már soha többé nem tudjuk meg, mekkora volt a fényképezőgép belső hőmérséklete, hogy a fotó egy a fotómasina által létrehozott HDR kép végterméke-e, hogy a fotó része-e egy képsornak, hogy a zajszűrés be volt-e kapcsolva stb. Igaz, hétköznapjainkban ezen adatok közül nem mind fontos, de akadhat olyan helyzet, amikor igenis jó lett volna tudni a választ a fenti kérdések bármelyikére.
